Family Birthdays
Every spring I get a call from a friend whose husband, son and daughter all have birthdays around the same time of year. They have always loved my basic chocolate cake with buttercream icing. As this year my friends husband is celebrating his '40th'! , we decided to place him in a more prominent place on the cake, yet still highlighting the children.
(as you have probably noticed, I love using edible glitter, which really helped set off the 40th celebration).
** Stay tuned thhis week, as I am working on a "Fairy Cake!" Have been busy trying to come up with a sketch. This should be a fun challenge! **

La Bete Noire (The Black Beast)
For all you Chocoholics out there... This is the Bomb!... It is one layer of intensly rich fudgy cake (flourless) covered in a smear of rich chocolate ganache. This one I just completed minutes ago. As much as I love chocolate (& eating), trust me, a very tiny piece goes a loooong way.

Mardi Gras
After watching some of the festivities going on in New Orleans last night, I thought about this cake I had done about 2 years ago. This was for one of my favorite personal trainers at the gym -- who, actually is a chef by trade! Anyway, he always said when he turned 40 he wanted me to make him a cake. He LOVED this one!

St. Patrick's Day
The only things I make around St. Patrick's Day are Irish Soda Bread and Irish Potatoes (YUM). However; I did find a green themed cake that I made a few years ago for my son. Was pleased with how it came out - wish all cakes were this cute!
and so I introduce..... GUMBY !!!

Wedding Cakes
First of all, I want to make it clear that I DO NOT do wedding cakes! Yes, I have done them, back when I worked in a bakery, but simply can not commit to them as if I need to start over, I just can't ask the baker for another couple layers of cake and more tubs of icing... PLUS, way too stressful dealing with bridal parties. My very own SISTER is getting married this fall and I AM NOT making her cake. Told her I would do a grooms cake, shower cake, cupcakes -- but no wedding cake!
This cake I did for a very dear friend, who was throwing a 25th wedding anniversary party for close friends of theirs. She kept telling me that it was an 'anniversary cake' and not a wedding cake: "Susan, can't you just make a few layers and put them on top of each other?? " ....that's how I got suckered in.
Anyway, as wedding season approaches:

(continued.. Baby Shower Cakes)
along with the same theme, here are a few more baby cakes!
Loved this one! Yes, it is one long piece of icing, squiggled around the entire top. A steady hand (and no heavy walkers in the kitchen) is the trick! You can easily get 'decorators cramp' from this technique.
