Holiday

So I was looking for a picture for another reason, and came across these.  The one of the soccer ball, of course isn't holiday, but oh well...  The next are a Buche de Noel (which i will be making for this year) and a Haunted House Gingerbread house (hopefully i didn't already post it - or i will remove :-)).  Included the gingerbread house because, well, typically people make gingerbread houses at Christmas Time.  This was very fun to make and all edible!

Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Angry Bird Cupcakes

Alright -- so here they are...  Red, Blue and Yellow Angry Birds!!  Boy do I feel angry after spending a day hand creating these little angry guys...  Hope you like :D

Movie Star Cake

It has been a while since my last entry...  Although now posting, have been doing a bunch of cakes and amounts of chocolate dipped coconut macaroons -- includung 600 (!) for my sister's wedding.  The cake below was for today.  One of the managers of a local retail store is an extra in the up coming Staven Speilberg movie, Lincoln.  The film and stars are of fondant.  Otherwise, chocolate cake with dark chocolate buttercream.

The Roof Cake!

Ok, So here's the story...

Once upon a time there was an 89 year old man who lived out in the middle of Nowhere, VA.  He was a very fit 'ol chap -- having outlived 2 lovely wives.

Well, every fall he enjoys getting up onto the top of his roof and blowing the leaves out of the gutters with the leaf blower.

Well, this past fall, he was up on the roof blowing the leaves, and you'll never guess...  The LADDER FELL FROM THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE.  yup.  So the 'ol chap was up on the roof with no one to help him.  Being so clever, he decided to make a lasso out of the extention cord.  He lassoed the ladder and was able to pull it up to the side of the house.  The 'ol chap got down safely!

So, this weekend as he and his family celebrate his 90th!!! Birthday, they thought this an appropriately themed cake.

Enjoy!

Family Birthdays

Every spring I get a call from a friend whose husband, son and daughter all have birthdays around the same time of year.  They have always loved my basic chocolate cake with buttercream icing.  As this year my friends husband is celebrating his '40th'! , we decided to place him in a more prominent place on the cake, yet still highlighting the children.

(as you have probably noticed, I love using edible glitter, which really helped set off the 40th celebration).

** Stay tuned thhis week, as I am working on a "Fairy Cake!"  Have been busy trying to come up with a sketch.  This should be a fun challenge!  **

La Bete Noire (The Black Beast)

For all you Chocoholics out there...  This is the Bomb!...  It is one layer of intensly rich fudgy cake (flourless) covered in a smear of rich chocolate ganache.  This one I just completed minutes ago.  As much as I love chocolate (& eating), trust me, a very tiny piece goes a loooong way.

yummmm:

Fleur de Lis Brownies

Love my Fleur de lis!

Mardi Gras

After watching some of the festivities going on in New Orleans last night, I thought about this cake I had done about 2 years ago.  This was for one of my favorite personal trainers at the gym -- who, actually is a chef by trade!  Anyway, he always said when he turned 40 he wanted me to make him a cake.  He LOVED this one!

St. Patrick's Day

The only things I make around St. Patrick's Day are Irish Soda Bread and Irish Potatoes (YUM).  However; I did find a green themed cake that I made a few years ago for my son.  Was pleased with how it came out - wish all cakes were this cute!

and so I introduce.....   GUMBY !!!

Wedding Cakes

First of all, I want to make it clear that I DO NOT do wedding cakes!  Yes, I have done them, back when I worked in a bakery, but simply can not commit to them as if I need to start over, I just can't ask the baker for another couple layers of cake and more tubs of icing... PLUS, way too stressful dealing with bridal parties.  My very own SISTER is getting married this fall and I AM NOT making her cake.  Told her I would do a grooms cake, shower cake, cupcakes -- but no wedding cake!

This cake I did for a very dear friend, who was throwing a 25th wedding anniversary party for close friends of theirs.  She kept telling me that it was an 'anniversary cake' and not a wedding cake: "Susan, can't you just make a few layers and put them on top of each other?? "  ....that's how I got suckered in.

Anyway, as wedding season approaches:

Soccer

As soccer season is upon us, here's one I did a while ago for the boys:

(continued.. Baby Shower Cakes)

along with the same theme, here are a few more baby cakes!
Loved this one!  Yes, it is one long piece of icing, squiggled around the entire top.  A steady hand (and no heavy walkers in the kitchen) is the trick!  You can easily get 'decorators cramp' from this technique.

Wish the pastel pink showed up better in this photo.

Star Wars

After watching the Oscars last night, dug out this picture of a Star Wars themed cake I did for the boys' birthday many a year ago...

Scooby Doo!

(oh my!  a rare shot with me in it)  When the boys were little (more like toddler age) and I had to make a character cake, I would lift them up after I had finished to see their reactions;  if they exclaimed happily, then I knew I correctly captured the image of the character.  Phew!  Kids can be tough judges..  Here's to our beloved Scooby Doo!

Day Brighteners

On such a wet, dark and dreary day I was thinking of how nice it would be to engulf a sweet tender cupcake....  this led me to dig up a picture of some cupcakes I did in the fall.  I really liked how the packaging turned out, as well.

Hope these help brighten your day =)

100th Day of School

My son came home from school yesterday and told me that it had been the 100th Day of School.  We remembered how over the years I had made a total of 6(!!!!!!) 100th day of school cakes -- 2 for each of the boys classes --.  The cake in this picture was done while my youngest was in kindergarten.  Hundred Day cakes must have a hundred of 'something' on them.  Ours had 100 little mice, made from royal icing, which were the teachers theme in the classroom.  Was a fun cake to create!

Picket Sign Birthday Cake

Was thrilled to get this cake order from a recent Real Estate Client!  It is my deliciously, moist chocolate cake frosted in buttercream and chocolate.  I was not privey to the 'inside joke' for the request of the picket sign -- I can only hope the receiver was entertained!

Red Velvet

This was a 4 layer Red Velvet Cake done recently, as a result of my postings on Facebook.  Delectable, velvety texture complemented by a rich vanilla buttercream.
